"Tea for the Tower" was a new venture for Kettle Bridge — a proper concert! We had been "having discussions" with the Farleighs Choir for some time with a view to staging some sort of joint venture in the village. When West Farleigh Church decided they needed to start fundraising for the repair of the ancient and crumbling tower, a concert was suggested. As most of the members of the choir are WI members, an afternoon tea was considered appropriate for the occasion.

Preparations, apart from practising our music, included finding a supply of cake stands, table cloths and tea pots, as well as volunteer cake and sandwich makers. All came together beautifully.

There was an invitation to concert-goers for a pre-concert climb to the top of the tower. This didn't appeal to me considering that we were there to raise money for its repair!

A programme of popular music was put together, arranged roughly in chronological order, beginning with medieval music, such as Pastime with Good Company and Greensleeves — accompanied by some stirring drumming from Mary. There were tunes to sing along to and even a three part gospel arrangement with audience participation. A full afternoon tea was served to the guests in the interval.

The choir and concertina band gave a pretty fine performance, to a very appreciative audience (was it the music, the cake or the Prosecco which pleased them most?) and approximately £750 was raised. There was also a good deal of interest in our instruments — maybe some new players coming along? A good job done!
