Kettle Bridge Concertinas were asked to perform at a fete to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee at St Michael’s Church in Maidstone on Saturday 9th June 2012. This fete was to comprise of stalls and entertainment followed by a special Jubilee tea. We were to be one of the entertainments for the afternoon.

Being a weekend, it was great that most of the band were able to attend. Sandy, MFD, Pat, Tricia, Sally, Trina, Sue, Pom, Liz, John and David were all able to be there to play. On arrival, we were each treated to some of the specially red, white and blue decorated cakes each with a strawberry on top – delicious!

Following a week of very wet weather, it was good to find that this particular day was fine and sunny. We were able to play outside, although pegs were needed to secure the music to stop it blowing away in the wind! We did two spots, each lasting half an hour. The first immediately followed the opening of the fete and we played outside next to the church. Our second performance was in the church itself.

We played through a number of our favourites, including Liberty Bell, Tip Toe through the Tulips, The Bourées, When the Red, Red Robin, Somewhere over the Rainbow and many others. On this occasion, we did not get the audience to sing along; this was very much a performance for others to listen to, the first time we have done that. So it was a challenge and we learnt a lot from it. Altogether though it was a good afternoon.
